2011 Komen Tyler Grantees Announced

KOMEN TYLER AFFILIATE AWARDS LOCAL GRANTS

 

The Tyler Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded grants totaling over $246,500 to local agencies to aid in the fight against breast cancer.  The grants committee was comprised of local community members who reviewed all requests.  The grants were awarded according to their applicability to the priority results of the Community Profile Needs Assessment conducted in 2009. A similar assessment was completed for 2011.  The funds for the grants were raised at the 2010 Komen Tyler Race for the Cure. 

Grantees are as follows:

Northeast Texas Public Health District Breast Health and Screening Initiative awarded $200,000 to serve as a third party administrator for screening and diagnostic procedures to women in Smith County who are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Trinity Mother Frances – The Ross Breast Center “Una Jornada de Esperanza”  $5,500 to provide education and breast self-exam training sessions for Hispanic women in Smith County.

Trinity Mother Frances –The Ross Breast Center “A Hopeful Journey” $1,500 to provide education and breast self-exam training sessions specifically for African American women in Smith County.

Trinity Mother Frances –The Ross Breast Center “A Hopeful Journey” $3,000 to provide breast health and breast cancer education and outreach targeted to, but not limited to women ages 45-55 of all ethnic backgrounds in Smith County.

Trinity Mother Frances –The Ross Breast Center “Here for the Journey” $12,000 to provide breast cancer rehabilitation products to medically under-served women in Smith County.  The products include prostheses, lymphodema sleeves, wigs, special bras, stocking caps and headwear.

ETMC Cancer Institute awarded $15,000 for “Pin-A-Sister” to raise breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection among African American women in Smith County.  This program allows the opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to witness to others on the importance of early detection.

ETMC Cancer Institute awarded $7,000 for “Pin-A-Friend” to reduce disparities in accessing breast cancer screenings and treatment in women ages 45-65 in Smith County. This program also allows the opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to witness to others on the importance of early detection.

Trinity Clinic Medical Genetics “Breast Cancer Risk Evaluation and Action (RE-ACT)”  $2,500 to promote awareness of breast cancer risk and education particularly among Hispanic, African American and medically underserved women in Smith County.
