Our Community Need

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We would like to take this opportunity to share with you the results of our 2009 Community Profile. The Community Profile is the established assessment process used to understand the state of breast cancer in Smith County.  Zip Code Asset Map       Bus Route Asset Map

The Community Profile process was extensive and involved training on how to complete the profile, compilation of the Community Profile Team, demographic, exploratory, and qualitative data research and creation of an asset map indicating health care/social services in targeted areas.

The results of the profile will be used to establish focused granting priorities, education needs and determine the priority populations with regards to breast cancer for Smith County. The following priorities were established:

•    Priority: Increase educational programs targeting African American women, using established 
      outreach programs and volunteer driven education.

•    Priority: Expand existing partnerships and establish marketing campaign to increase awareness  
      and access to services for Hispanic women. 

•    Priority: Focus on targeting women likely to move out of the continuum of care with education
      about the risks of not being routinely screened and the resources available in the community.

As our community “turns pink” in October we would like you, our partner in the fight against breast cancer, to know that we are here to assist you. We have a variety of Komen educational materials, “Your Breast Cancer Treatment Handbook” by Judy C. Kneece, RN, OCN and other resources which we will gladly provide upon request.
